Modern Word: Israel
Phonetic Spelling: Yaw-shawr’-aw-law’
Hebrew Word: יָשָׁרעַל
Arabic Word:
إسرائيل (‘iisrayiyl)
Paleo-Hebrew: ????????????????
Definition: From a combination of Yashar and Al, meaning “righteous one of the Most High”. Yashar’al in its remez meaning is yah (I AM), sha (saves) resh (the first) Al (of YaH/The Most High), i.e., the chosen one (the first of whom YaH saves). Modern day translations show it as Yisra’el, which is inaccurate. Another name of Ya’acov (Jacob) and his descendants.
